A man was left reeling after he was slapped with a hefty bill for a modest round of drinks at Dublin’s renowned The Temple Bar, totalling a staggering €107.20 – the order comprised one beer, one Coke, two rums, and six Baby Guinness shots.
The receipt broke down the costs as follows: a pint of Heineken at an eye-watering €11.45, a Coke priced at €4.95, six Baby Guinness shots costing €11.35 each (totalling an astonishing €68.10), and two Malibu shots at €11.35 apiece, adding up to €22.70.
To put these figures into perspective, Ryan, the shocked patron who took to Twitter under the username @Ryan_AVFCC to share his story, pointed out that a 70cl bottle of Malibu is priced at just €17.50 at Dunnes Stores, highlighting the stark difference compared to the bar’s pricing for merely two shots.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, April 4 at 2:52 pm, quickly caught fire on social media. Ryan voiced his shock at the exorbitant total for what he deemed a relatively small order, stating: “Knew it would be expensive but f**k me.”
In an attempt to justify the steep prices, a note at the bottom of the receipt explained: “All prices include live music and cover charge.”, reports Belfast Live.
Despite being praised for its dynamic scene and authentic Irish music sessions, not to mention drawing in plenty of tourists, the staggering bill from a Temple Bar has sparked a fierce debate over the high expenses linked to one of Dublin’s most frequented attractions. The prices have drawn flak from critics who described them as “a rip-off”, “daylight robbery” and simply “unbelievable”.
The response to the exorbitant charge for six Baby Guinness shots in the pub was swift and critical, with one patron saying: “Nearly £70 for 6 Baby Guinness, I’d never check my bank app again!”
Another said: “WTF! ! ? ! ! ? Where is that? 70 quid for 6 Guinness? Hope they sprinkled some gold on top.”
The price tag for a pint of Heineken also caught attention, leading on person to post: “Pint of beer for over £11? Absolute joke.”
Echoing the sentiment, another person remarked: “Omg I would have walked out,” while someone else recounted their expensive encounter: “Dublin is brutal. Did 82 euros on 4 gin and tonics last year. Left my glass for 1 minute it was swept up by glass collector half full.”
One astonished customer compared this to their regular spend, stating: “More than my food shopping bill for week.”
However, some defended the venue, pointing to its prime location and entertainment. Defending the pub, one person said: “To be fair, as stated at the bottom of the receipt, prices include live music.”
Another made a case for expectation versus reality by stating: “You go to one of the most popular tourist bars in the world, then act shocked when it’s expensive lmao.”
