Patrick Dorgu has had a bright start to life at Old Trafford but the Manchester United new-boy wants to improve his attacking output and is modelling his game on two other players.

Patrick Dorgu wants to improve his attacking output in the final third for Manchester United

Patrick Dorgu is watching Alphonso Davies and Theo Hernandez in a bid to add more attacking threat to his game as a wing-back at Manchester United.

The Dane joined for £25million from Lecce in the mid-season window and has made an assured start to life at Old Trafford. Having played the wing-back role at previous clubs, he has slotted in well to Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, usually operating on the left flank.

Dorgu started on the right against Wolves as Amorim rotated his squad between European assignments, but he is expected to eventually hold down that left wing-back role.

The 20-year-old sent in some wicked crosses against Wolves and has looked a danger in the final third, although he is yet to register a goal or an assist in his dozen appearances for the club, and Dorgu is keen to improve his output in attacking areas.

“It’s a very attack-minded position,” he said. “I think I just need to improve my decision-making, to think fast on the pitch and to connect better with my teammates.

“I really like to get forward and help the team score goals and I just need to improve on my decision-making. But it will come.”

Dorgu has watched videos of Bayern Munich raider Davies and AC Milan’s Hernandez to pick up aspects of playing in this system, suggesting the Canada and France internationals are both good fits for what a player should provide as a wing-back.

“Yeah, I think they suit the position very well,” he told United’s matchday programme. “They’re very attack-minded and they get forward a lot on the pitch.

“Alphonso Davies plays as a winger in the internationals and he has the quality to play there as well.”

Dorgu has survived the maelstrom around United this season to impress, despite making a significant step up in January, and he believes his calm approach can help him survive the pressure-cooker atmosphere around the club, especially in what has been such a disappointing season.

“I think the pressure is big at every club but especially United,” he said. “I think the pressure is high because the expectation is so high. But being calm on the pitch helps every player to improve and develop.

“Obviously, you know when you come in during a season like this, there was the pressure, with the expectation of the fans for the new players, it will be higher, for us to help the team as much as possible. I knew that from the start.”
