The Indonesian animated phenomenon Jumbo, directed and written by Ryan Adriandhy, has now overtaken Disney’s Frozen II to become the highest-grossing animated film ever released in Indonesia.
Frozen II had held the record with 4.63 million admissions, but the locally-produced Jumbo surpassed that total today, its 19th day of release, and has now reached 4.97 million admissions.
The film’s breakout success could have a transformative effect on Indonesia’s rising animation industry. Considering that Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most-populous country (behind only China, India, and the United States), this is a significant development. As we reported earlier, no homegrown animated film in the country had ever even reached 700K admissions. Jumbo’s numbers are truly unprecedented.
Among all local films released in Indonesia, including live-action productions, Jumbo currently ranks in ninth place all-time for admissions. There’s no telling how high the film will go on the all-time list; the country’s top film of all-time, 2022’s KKN di Desa Penari, has 10.06 million admissions. Per tracking firm Cinepoint, Jumbo had more admissions today — 582,407 — than any other day so far in its 19-day box office run. Here is a current chart via Cinepoint:
Jumbo has currently grossed around US$11.8 million (199 million Indonesian Rupiah), per Cinepoint. The top-grossing local film KKN di Desa Penari grossed US$27.4 million, while the top-grossing film of all-time in the country, Avengers: Endgame, grossed $34.7 million.
Produced by Visinema Pictures, the film’s trailer can be viewed below. Per the official synopsis: “Don, a boy who gets bullied and nicknamed ‘Jumbo’ by his peers because of his chubby physique wants to get even with the bully, but a spirit named Meri suddenly appears and asks for Don’s help to reunite her with her family’s spirits being in trouble.”
