Quick overview:
The latest Manchester United news as we take a look ahead to their Premier League games against Wolves and Bournemouth – plus the Europa League clash vs Athletic Bilbao.
It’s back to Premier League action for Manchester United this weekend, following their midweek Europa League drama against French opponents Lyon.
Two late extra-time goals from Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire saw United book their place in the semi-final of the Europa League where they will face Athletic Bilbao. The aggregate score ended up being 7-6 to United in what was a high-octane showdown.
After the game, Ruben Amorim confirmed that focus will now be on European matters. The club are expected to, therefore, make changes to try and avoid any unnecessary injuries in their upcoming Premier League matches.
United are in action on Sunday afternoon when they take on Wolves at Old Trafford. They then play Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium before the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.
Amorim has a few injury concerns around his squad in the build-up to those games.
United will be without Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee, who will miss the rest of the season with knee and hamstring injuries. There are still, also, doubts around the availability of Amad, Ayden Heaven and Matthijs de Ligt.
The trio are still expected back before the end of the season, but could need to bit longer to finish their recovery from their respective concerns. Heaven was back in the squad against Newcastle United after recovering from an ankle injury picked up against Leicester, but Amorim confirmed he had a “small issue” in the build-up to the match against Lyon that saw him miss the clash.
Their other two injury concerns are Jonny Evans and Toby Collyer. Evans was back in training ahead of the game against Lyon, but he was not included in the United squad for the match; he was last in the group for the Boxing Day clash against Wolves.
Collyer has missed the last four games in all competitions with a leg injury. Amorim confirms that he expects the midfielder to miss a “few weeks” owing to that problem.
Looking ahead to the Europa League semi-final, the good news for United is that some players close to a return could be back in time. United also don’t have any suspension issues to deal with for that game – due to all of the yellow cards from the competition (so far) being wiped after the quarter-final stage.
It means the only worry United will have in terms of suspensions for the competition is if a player is sent off in the semi-final clash vs Athletic Bilbao. If that happens – either through a straight red in either leg or sending off on the back of two bookings in the second leg – any player shown the red card will then be suspended for the final should United get through.
