Full details below:
The seven-time world champion will break off his latest charge for Crucible glory against a familiar foe.
Will he or won’t he? That was the question on every snooker fan’s mind during the build-up to this year’s World Championship at the Crucible – but Ronnie O’Sullivan WILL feature at the iconic venue.
A seven-time winner, the Rocket is, arguably, the greatest ever player to pick up a cue and, in the modern era, he can create even more history in Sheffield this year. Indeed, should the world-famous potter go all the way in 2025, he would surpass Stephen Hendry and become the first eight-time winner of the showcase event.
O’Sullivan, 49, was uncertain to play at the Crucible this year due to form concerns. However, with the big one in his sights, once again, the green light has been given.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, O’Sullivan told TNT Sports: “I’m proud to continue my record of having never missed a World Championship. I have many fond memories at the Crucible – and I look forward to making more in 2025.
“I’ve enjoyed some good prep with my new cue over the last week so feel good ahead.”
But when will the Rocket get down to business? He has been drawn against a familiar foe in Ali Carter in the first round this year – and they have plenty of history on and off the baize.
As time has passed, that rivalry has mellowed, somewhat, but snooker fans are sure to get a high-octane match if they can negotiate the wait. While the Rocket is usually inked-in for a weekend slot, he will not start his charge for an eighth crown until Tuesday – with that best-of-10 match then brought to a conclusion on Wednesday.
Their first session on Tuesday (April 22) will get underway at 2.30pm. O’Sullivan – seeded fifth this year – and Carter will then chalk up their cues in a second session at the same time on Wednesday (April 23).
TNT Sports will cover the entire 17-day event. You can all watch the action there with a valid subscription.
However, as per usual, the BBC also have extensive live coverage with highlights and catch-up shows to feast on. The winner of O’Sullivan vs Carter will play Zhang Anda or Pang Junxu.
