Lyon head coach Paulo Fonseca has admitted that his side “celebrated too much” before their eventual Europa League collapse against Manchester United on Thursday.

The Ligue 1 side were 4-2 ahead on the night and 6-4 in front on aggregate when Alexandre Lacazette scored from the penalty spot in the 109th minute. Jubilant scenes followed as Lacazette ran to the dugout to celebrate with his Lyon teammates and coaching staff, including Fonseca.

However, United somehow sparked a dramatic late fight back. Bruno Fernandes gave Ruben Amorim’s side a glimmer of hope in the 114th minute, slotting home a penalty to halve the deficit.

Six minutes later, Kobbie Mainoo completed the comeback. The 20-year-old midfielder, who had replaced Rasmus Hojlund up front, kept his composure inside the box to level for United.

There was still time for the Reds to win it, as Harry Maguire ventured from the back to head Casemiro’s cross into the bottom corner and spark wild celebrations inside Old Trafford.

Lyon’s players, meanwhile, slumped to the deck and could barely believe what they had witnessed. Seconds later, the full-time whistle was blown and United won 5-4 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate.

Assessing how Lyon, who played the final 33 minutes including extra-time with 10 men after Corentin Tolliso’s red card, collapsed, Fonseca has claimed his team over celebrated making it 4-2.

He said: “It is a mix of emotions in my head. Until now, it is difficult to understand what happened. I think, first of all, we did magnificent things.

“We led 4-2 with one player less on the pitch but we celebrated the 4-2 too much when the match was not finished. I think that we lacked emotional balance at this moment.

“It is the only negative that I can identify. We celebrated the 4-2 when there was still time to play. We should have thought about continuing to manage the match. We lacked experience at this moment […] I am sad because I thought we deserved more.”

United head coach Amorim, meanwhile, was asked about whether it was the best game he has been involved in as a manager.

He said: “It is hard to say. In here and the sound of the last two goals were amazing, that is something we can keep for future, it was a good feeling but, in the end of the game, [if] you go to semi-finals, you need to win it.

“If you go to the semi-finals and you don’t win it, it is the same feeling. We need to focus on next stage and try to win competition.”
