Manchester United produced a stunning comeback at Old Trafford to secure a place in the semi-final of the Europa League
Match winner Harry Maguire led the Manchester United reaction on social media following the dramatic 5-4 victory over Lyon in the Europa League.
It was one of the greatest comebacks at Old Trafford after Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico cancelled out goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot. Despite being down to ten men, Lyon controlled the game up until the last six minutes of extra-time.
Bruno Fernandes converted from the penalty spot, Kobbie Mainoo produced a sublime finish, and Maguire’s header ignited scenes of absolute chaos at M16. Taking to Instagram, the defender shared the moment he headed the ball in for the winner in the 120th minute. “Wow,” he wrote. What a feeling. YOU REDS!,” followed by a love heart.
Maguire’s post received comments from Fernandes, Joshua Zirkzee and Ethan Wheatley, who is currently on loan at Walsall. Former Reds stars Scott McTominay and Jesse Lingard were also spotted in the comments.
Mainoo, who also scored late in the game, shared the message: “Sending love to my shooter, Zirkzee.” The midfielder donned the striker’s celebration, which prompted a response from Zirkzee. He replied: “General.”
Ugarte sent a passionate message, writing: “In love with this club. Unbelievable night.”
Reds captain Fernandes simply shared United’s post to his Instagram stories while Dalot shared a number of reactions.
Zirkzee, who watched from the stands, called out fans who left the stadium early. “To the fans who left when we were down. Have a listen to this,” he wrote.
Here are the rest of the players’ reactions.
Casemiro: “Crazy night at Old Trafford with our incredible fans!! Semi-final, here we come,” followed by a red circle emoji.
Andre Onana: “Built with ONANA MENTALITY,” followed by a fist and red circle emoji.
Patrick Dorgu: “Wow!,” followed by a starstruck emoji.
Rasmus Hojlund: “When the road to a semi gives you a semi.”
Harry Amass: “Wow,” with three starstruck emojis.
Speaking after the game, head coach Ruben Amorim said: “I think that is why we like this sport so much, all the frustration that a coach has in this season, the bad moments.
“When you have moments like this, it is all worth it. But then you finish the game, you calm down, and you realise we have a game on Sunday. Then we have to see how the players are and if they are fit to play because we have to focus a lot on the Europa League.”
