Here’s what you need to know:

Man United are into the Europa League semi-finals after one of the most astonishing nights of European football Old Trafford has ever witnessed.

Maguire won it late on
Maguire won it late on

Manchester United produced an Old Trafford comeback for the ages that kept their hopes of winning the Europa League and qualifying for next season’s Champions League alive.

United were 2-0 up against Lyon after 70 minutes but Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico cancelled out goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot, before Tolisso was sent-off just before full-time.

Despite being a man down, goals from Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette had Lyon in control with six minutes of extra-time to go and United in need of a miracle.

A miracle is what they got. Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot, Kobbie Mainoo finished superbly and then Harry Maguire headed in to spark scenes of utter bedlam inside Old Trafford. United are off to Bilbao.

Subs sum it up

As the two sets of players tried to get themselves back in position after Maguire’s show-stealing, heart-stopping winner, the United subs that had charged onto the pitch to celebrate returned to the dugout.

Patrick Dorgu, Manuel Ugarte and Rasmus Hojlund danced their way in front of the K Stand, passed the away end and along the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand, roaring at the United fans, waving their arms in delight and generally looking like they couldn’t believe what they had just witnessed.

It was a night to go down in Old Trafford folklore. The look on the faces of those who had watched it unfold on the bench summed it up. What on earth had just happened?

Onana watch

There were barely two dozen Lyon fans in the away end when Andre Onana emerged from the tunnel at the opposite end of the ground around 45 minutes before kick-off. His arrival for his pre-match warm-up didn’t go unnoticed and they booed his presence.

The United fans inside the stadium gave him a much more significant roar and as soon as he was around the Stretford End goal the PA system began playing Rihanna’s What’s My Name? That includes the oft-repeated lyrics ‘Oh na na, what’s my name?’ His name won’t be forgotten in Lyon any time soon.

The goalkeeper began the move which led to United’s opening goal and he showed his sky-high self-assurance hadn’t been hit by running to the away end to celebrate. Amorim likes his confidence, but these things always come with a risk.

This time he backed the talk up. There was a simple save from a header, a better save from Cherki and then an excellent stop to deny Tolisso. He was front-footed for Cherki’s extra-time goal but when Maguire pulled United out of the fire, Onana sprinted to the touchline and into the arms of Amorim.

Fernandes’ ovation

You know an effort at goal must be good if it doesn’t go in but still warrants a standing ovation. That is exactly what Fernandes got 10 minutes before half-time.

His run behind was picked out by Diogo Dalot but the 50-yard pass was dropping over the captain’s shoulder and he was still at an angle to goal. He threw himself at the falling ball, connected brilliantly and slammed a stunning volley against Lucas Perri’s goal.

It would have been the goal of the season had it crashed into the Stretford End net, but even without that reward it was a piece of skill and a show of technique that deserved recognition, which is exactly what it got.

Yoro’s mixed night

Leny Yoro scored his first United goal in the first leg of this quarter-final tie and his contribution back at Old Trafford was important as well.

He showed plenty of attacking intent with his forward runs, trying to become that third centre-back who can pop up in the final third, and he had his moments defensively, too.

There was a moment in the first half when some excellent Lyon build-up play saw Cherki played in behind the 19-year-old. But Yoro turned on the afterburners, surging ahead of the dangerous Cherki to mop up the danger and pass back to Onana, who could clear.

When the ball went out of play a few moments later it was Harry Maguire who shouted across to Yoro, applauding him for the quality and alertness of his defending. Maguire’s applause was notable because Yoro can occasionally slip into bad habits, as he did soon after when wafting a foot at a Lyon cross rather than being assertive.

He has the talent and his United teammates know they just need to keep him switched on to get the best out of him.

No pyro no party

United made a big point of trying to rev Old Trafford up for the biggest game of the season and that included unveiling a new tifo celebrating the club’s European history in front of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand. It was an impressive image.

They also promised pyrotechnics and they were certainly better than the ones before the last-16 tie against Real Sociedad, but they felt a little unnecessary when the Old Trafford atmosphere can speak for itself.

Pre-match light shows and firework displays are all the rage now but some stadiums don’t require them and this is one of them. If you’re going follow the lead of other clubs, at least make it unforgettable. This wasn’t that.
