Here’s what you need to know:
The professional dancer responded to the deeply personal question online
Amy Dowden shared a really candid response with fans after being asked ‘when she’ll be a mum’ while taking part in a social media question and answer session.
The Strictly Come Dancing star implored her followers to ask her some questions while she had a bit of spare time ahead of returning to her dance school to teach some of her students.
Amy, who recently wrapped up her own joint headline tour with friend and Strictly co-star Carlos Gu, first had a little catch up with her loyal following after being busy with the string of theatre shows before taking a well-earned break in the sun.
She said: “It’s been a little while hasn’t it since the tour finished, I still haven’t posted about that! I still can’t believe it’s over, I’ve got such tour blues right now it’s unreal. We went straight on holidays for a few days after the tour which was so needed and so lush…”
Amy went on to say she went “straight back to reality” as she paid her monthly visit to the hospital for an injection which has been on-going since finishing chemotherapy for breast cancer last year.
“It’s that time of year now where I feel like I have loads of hospital appointments because it’s the yearly, it’s the year, every year those dreaded scans and appoitments along with the rest of them. Just got to get through, push through it…”
Amy then went on to add an ‘ask me a question’ box to her video on her Instagram Story, allowing her followers to ask her some questions.
One responded to the professional dancer and asked: “When are you going to be a mum?” which prompted an honest and detailed response from Amy.
She said: “I get asked this a lot and especially in the last two years, I’ve really struggled with it. SO I kind of want to use my platform to help educate and raise awareness.
“But number one, it’s never a guarantee that people will become parents but number two, after a cancer diagnosis it’s not easy, especially after chemotherapy. Chemotherapy can destroy your fertility so in a woman, it can destroy your eggs and your ovaries may never start functioning again.”
Amy went on to share how she underwent fertility treament after her diagnosis and mastectomy and said she was “lucky” that she and her husband have five embryos, or “five little Amy and Ben’s in the freezer”.
She also explained that she has a hormone-fed cancer which means she’s had to be put into early menopause and that becoming pregnant could higher the risk of the cancer returning.
The 34-year-old admitted that she “never realised” that her doctor would ask about her fertility plans after her cancer diagnosis or the impact chemotherapy would have. “It was all new to me,” she shared.
Amy went on to share that her consultant advised her not to think about a possible pregnancy until two years after finishing her treatment due to the risks of reoccurance being “really high”.
She said that whether she could carry a baby would depend on if she could be brought back out of the menopause as there is “never a guarantee that my woman side will reboot itself”.
Amy did go onto say: “Obviously, I really want to be a mum one day. I would love the honour of being a mum and I know Ben would be an amazing dad. There are other options. We are lucky we have five embryos so if we go down other routes, that’s always an option.”
She added: “I’ve got a whole other year to go before we even chat about it so there’s your answer there but I just hope it helps others.”
