The singer announced her news on The One Show
Fleur East shared her next big career move as she appeared on The One Show where she discussed playing icon Tina Turner.
During Tuesday’s (15th April) instalment of The One Show, Fleur East sat on the sofa alongside Professor Hannah Fry, and hosts Alex Jones and JB Gill.
JB announced the exciting news, as he shared: “Now, Fleur. It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for… You’re playing a rock icon in 12-time Tony nominated musical… But, you didn’t even tell me about it!”
Fleur responded: “I’m really excited to announce that I’ll be playing Tina in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical on the West End!”
As the studio erupted with applause, JB added that “there is no one better suited” as Alex commented: “That is amazing news. It’s been going for seven years, this is your first time doing a West End show, how much did you know about Tina before taking on the role?”
The star replied: “As a performer Tina has always been in my top five, I’ve definitely channelled Tina over the years, but I didn’t know much about her story.
“And all the challenges she faced, when I first went to see the musical with my husband I was just taken back by her resilience, her strength…”
The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant added: “What a woman… I just thought what an honour to play such an incredible woman.”
Fleur joked she’s nervous and “excited” to perform River Deep Mountain High, but she “likes a challenge” as she’s ready to take on the role.
They then shared a clip of her performing a Fleur East song during her stint on the X Factor back in 2014 where she finished in second place.
She lost out on first place as she went up against Ben Haenow in the final. Fleur later appeared on Strictly in 2022, and against lost out on the top spot to Hamza Yassin.
The singer admitted she’s been in a “Tina Turner rabbit hole” as she’s been studying old videos of the star performing on stage.
“There’s nobody like her, she’s so distinctive in the way she moves as well. Have you got that down?” asked Alex Jones as Fleur laughed and replied: “I’m getting there!”
