Manchester United have been handed a potential boost in their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson following the Serie A club’s latest appointment.

The Red Devils are one of a number of Premier League teams credited with interest in the Brazilian following his emergence in Italy.The 25-year-old joined Atalanta from Salernitana in the summer of 2022 and went on to become one of the driving forces behind their famous Europa League triumph in the 2023/24 season.

Ederson remains under contract with Atalanta until 2027 but has been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent months. Rumours first emerged during the January transfer window and have since resurfaced ahead of the summer, with reports suggesting a potential €60 million move.

Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool have also been linked with the midfielder, who is expected to attract plenty of interest. However, Atalanta’s latest boardroom appointment could give United an edge in any potential deal ahead of next season.

12 months after his Old Trafford exit, former United director John Murtough has joined the Italian club as their new Director of Global Development. Murtough served United for over a decade between 2013 and 2024, but departed shortly after the arrival of co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Atalanta confirmed the appointment: “Atalanta BC are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. John Murtough as Director of Global Development within the Club’s Sports Department, effective immediately.

“The 54-year-old English executive, who will report directly to Sporting Director Tony D’Amico, will play a pivotal role in enhancing the Club’s international strategy and vision.”

It’s also worth noting that Ederson isn’t the only Atalanta player to have been linked with a move to Manchester United. Winger Ademola Lookman has previously been mentioned as a target, while forward Mateo Retegui, who is considered a promising prospect, has also been linked with a Premier League switch.

Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi has emerged as a breakout star in Serie A this season, keeping 16 clean sheets across all competitions. With United continuing to face uncertainty in goal following Andre Onana’s poor form, the club has been tipped to explore fresh options ahead of the summer window.
