Sonia is dealing with the arrival of her long-lost father Terry Cant

EastEnders fans have pointed out what they feel is a ‘plot hole’ as Sonia Fowler’s reason for leaving has seemingly been revealed.

Thursday (April 17) is set to mark Natalie Cassidy’s final appearance on the BBC soap, having played Sonia since she was 10-years-old in 1993.

With Natalie leaving to pursue new career opportunities fans have been questioning what will lead Sonia to depart Albert Square.

The character’s farewell week began with her longlost dad Terry Cant appearing on the show for the first time after years of viewers’ demands.

Mentioned all the way back in Sonia’s EatEnders debut year, Terry is a character who fans have waited over 30 years to see.

Back in 2021, Sonia thought she finally met her dad, when Brian Conley’s Tom ‘Rocky’ Cotton, faked his identity to scan her.

She was heartbroken to learn that Rocky had nothing to do with her father and was actually the brother of ‘Nasty’ Nick Cotton.

In scenes aired on Tuesday (April 15), Sonia struggled to accept that Terry was telling the truth about being her dad. However, he was able to produce an old passport and family photo to verify his identity.

Bianca Jackson wasn’t as keen on Terry after Sonia expressed wanting to give him a chance, pointing out that he left his family when they needed him.

Terry explained that he decided to come see his daughter upon hearing what she went through after hearing Bianca’s true crime podcast, explaining that he didn’t answer her old letter out of ‘cowardice’.

Another person not happy to see Terry, who said he owns a mindfulness business, was Jack Branning, who is the brother of Sonia’s mum Carol Jackson.

Despite his fears about Terry, Jack later told Sonia to trust her and to form a positive relationship with him if she feels it will help her.

The episode concluded with two big bombshells, the first seeing Sonia discover that Bianca tried to send her dad away behind her back.

However, the big moment arrived when Terry said he was leaving Walford in 48 hours and would like Sonia, her baby Juliet and eldest daughter Bex to come with him to his home in Bali.

With Sonia possibly leaving Albert Square to go live in Bali, EastEnders fans pointed out on the Reddit that this may be easier said than done.

@ourfriendinthenorth said: “Not Terry asking Sonia to go to BALI with him when she has a full time nursing job, no money (remember her and Reiss’s money issues?) and not to mention a new born baby(!) As per the laws of soap, I am sure none of this will be an issue and she can hop on a plane tomorrow indefinitely.”
