Latest Manchester United news and rumours as Leny Yoro has been subjected to criticism following Sunday’s defeat to Newcastle United
Former Arsenal man Thierry Henry is in the spotlight following his recent analysis of Manchester United defender Leny Yoro.
Ruben Amorim’s side were dismantled 4-1 by Newcastle United over the weekend, suffering their 14th Premier League defeat of the season. From a United perspective, the frustration lay in the ease with which their opponents scored all four goals, as they were completely outclassed in every department by the Magpies.
However, the performance has prompted some bizarre analysis, not least from pundit Henry. The Frenchman was discussing United’s defence on Monday Night Football and he singled out 19-year-old Yoro for criticism.
“Please stay on Yoro and [look at] what he’s asking for,” said Henry, pointing at the analysis screen. “I don’t know what he’s looking at.
“Looking at the linesman and trying to see if he’s going to bail you out, but I don’t know? I don’t know if he thought it was an offside or someone had a hold. We all know it’s a goal. What are you looking at? I actually don’t know. I’ve never seen it before.”
The comments sparked a flurry of backlash, with many describing the attack on Yoro as “lazy” and “embarrassing.” The clip has since been taken down by Sky Sports.
However, this isn’t the first time Henry has spoken about his fellow countryman. Prior to Yoro’s move to United, Henry commented on the youngster’s progress at Lille and his ability to establish himself as a first-team regular, though he did note that Yoro is still prone to mistakes due to his age and ongoing development.
“We often talk about Leny,” he told French outlet Le Petit Lillois last year. “He is having an exemplary start to his career. To establish himself in Lille as he is doing…
“He always has some young reactions, and that is completely normal. It comes slowly, you make mistakes and sometimes you get embarrassed.
“[But] he goes on to play one match after another, he starts quite often and quite often is good. It’s really good for him. He is professional, he’s a good guy, well-educated.
“I like him. He performs well. Afterwards, there are always things to refine, but that’s completely normal. Frankly, it’s really a more than positive progression.”
