Bruno Fernandes has piled praise on Scott McTominay after the former Manchester United midfielder kept Napoli in the hunt for the Serie A title by firing a brace against Empoli on Monday night.

The 28-year-old Scotland international scored his seventh and eighth goals of the Serie A campaign, either side of half-time, to move Antonio Conte’s side to within three points of Inter Milan at the summit.

McTominay left United last summer after more than two decades at the club to join the 2023 Serie A winners in a deal worth roughly £26million.

But despite leaving Old Trafford last summer, McTominay appears to have kept a close relationship with several of his former United teammates, including Fernandes.

The United captain was one of several United players – as well as Harry Maguire – to heap praise on the Scotland regular following his player-of-the-match display on Monday night, as he commented on McTominay’s Instagram post: “What a player!”

Since moving to Italy, McTominay has scored nine goals from 30 appearances across all competitions for Conte’s side and, earlier this year, opened up on his decision to leave United.

“It was a big decision, but in some ways it was quite straightforward. I saw the passionate fans, I saw the coach, I saw the players and I saw an opportunity,” said McTominay.

“I took it. I didn’t look back. It didn’t take me long to make the decision – because I knew that was what I wanted and I’ll never have any regrets in my life. As soon as I put my mind to something I want to do it, that’s it. There’s no holding me back.”
