Many people who are due benefit payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) may see their benefits paid early this week.

This is because when a payment date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, payments for benefits, including Universal Credit, Child Benefit, Pension Credit and Personal Independent Payment, are usually sent out early.

It comes after millions of people who receive Universal Credit should have seen their payments from the DWP increase this month.

Over the next week there are two bank holidays to mark the Easter period. These bank holiday dates will affect when payments are made.

The religious occasion marks two bank holidays and a four-day weekend for people across the UK, but Easter this year will be later than it was in 2024.

This year Good Friday will fall on April 18 and will be a bank holiday. Easter Sunday will be on April 20, and there will be another bank holiday on Monday, April 21 across the UK to celebrate the day – apart from in Scotland.

Here’s everything you need to know about how benefit payment dates will change over Easter.

When are benefits paid?

How often you get paid and on what date depends on what type of benefits you claim.

For example, Universal Credit is paid to claimants on the same day each month and Child Benefit is usually every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday.

According to gov.uk, benefits are paid:

  • Attendance Allowance – Usually every four weeks
  • Carer’s Allowance – Weekly in advance or every four weeks
  • Child Benefit – Usually every four weeks, or weekly if you’re a single parent or you or your partner get certain benefits
  • Disability Living Allowance – Usually every four weeks
  • Employment and Support Allowance – Usually every two weeks
  • Income Support – Usually every two weeks
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance – Usually every two weeks
  • Pension Credit – Usually every four weeks
  • Personal Independence Payment – Usually every four weeks
  • State Pension – Usually every four weeks
  • Universal Credit – Every month

What are the payment date changes over Easter?

According to gov.uk, if your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday you’ll usually be paid on the working day before. Although this may be different for Child Benefit.

All payments due to be paid on Monday, 21 April will be made on Thursday, 17 April instead. Payments due to be made on Friday, April 19 will also likely be paid on the Thursday too.

This means that certain benefits, including State Pension, Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment, Child Benefit and Attendance Allowance will arrive in bank accounts on Thursday, April 17.

In particular, Child Benefit is always paid on a Monday or Tuesday so payments will be different for many people this week.

Others may also be affected by the Easter bank holiday weekend, depending on your regular payment date. If you are usually paid on Mondays or Fridays you are likely to receive your benefits on Thursday instead.

If you are paid monthly you can calculate your next payment date by counting four weeks forward from your last payment date and seeing if it falls on one of the bank holiday dates.

If your benefit payment date is changing you won’t need to do anything to ensure you receive the payment – it will still be sent automatically. Your payment date will go back to normal following the bank holiday.

The amount you’re due to be paid will also remain the same unless your personal circumstances have changed.

Benefits are usually paid straight into your bank, building society or credit union account. You should tell the office that pays your benefit if you do not get your payment on the day it’s scheduled.
