The state of emergency has now been ended in Lanzarote
The Canary Islands government has ended the state of emergency in Lanzarote after floods swept through the municipalities of Arrefife (Lanzarote’s capital), Teguise and San Bartolome on Saturday afternoon (April 12).
Heavy rains resulted in flooding on the island over the course of the afternoon, with emergency services reporting 240 incidents. Five people were treated for minor injuries due to falls, Europa Press reports.
Most of the incidents reported were related to flooding in ground floors and garages. Several roads were closed on the island due to the floods.
At 4pm local time on Saturday, the Canary Islands government declared a state of emergency due to the risk of flooding caused by heavy rainfall, with residents and tourists advised to follow self-protection measures.
The Canary Islands government ended the state of emergency at 7am on Sunday, April 13.
In a statement on its website it said: “Following the end of the flooding caused by rain on April 12 in the municipalities of Arrecife, Teguise, and San Bartolomé on the island of Lanzarote, the island emergency situation has ended.”
No more heavy rain is forecast for the island today, according to Spain’s national weather agency Aemet. Forecast for the Canary Islands for April 14, it said: ”Generally cloudy periods and mostly cloudy skies in the north of the mountainous islands with a chance of light, occasional rain, as well as in the southern interior of Tenerife and Gran Canaria during the afternoon.
“In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, there is a low chance of light, scattered rain. Temperatures will remain unchanged. Moderate northerly winds.”
Following the floods, the Arrecife City Council – one of the worst affected areas, receiving up to 70 litres of rainfall per square metre – will request to be made a disaster area to enable residents and businesses to access aid and compensation.
Mayor Yonathan de León thanks residents, police and the government for their help in the clean-up efforts in Lanzarote’s capital. City council workers have been deployed around the clock to clear up debris and mud left by the floods.
But the mayor said that the city had been caught off guard and didn’t receive adequate warning to prepare the area for the floods. He’s calling for resources to help businesses and families recover, Europa Press reports.
The flooding in Lanzarote coincides with a popular time for the tourism industry with many British families holidaying there for the Easter break.
In light of the flooding the UK Foreign Office issued the following guidance, which remains current on April 14: “Heavy rainfall and flooding in Lanzarote occurred earlier today (13 April 2025) with Costa Teguise, San Bartolomé, and Arrecife particularly affected. Services across the island are affected.
“Some hotels are currently without power. Some roads are currently affected by mud. If you are in Lanzarote or travelling to Lanzarote, follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local weather updates.”
