Here’s what you need to know:
Despite a slight price increase, one supermarket continues to lead the pack this week
With the Easter holidays now well and truly under way for most families, many people will be looking at how they can make even the smallest of price cuts in their weekly shopping.
Whilst many people still consider the likes of Lidl and Aldi to be the cheapest when it comes to groceries, there is actually one supermarket that continues to be cheaper than them both when it comes to the same basket of eight essential items.
This week, Asda continues to lead the pack for the eighth time this year with its basket of staple items including baked beans, bread, coffee, and chicken.
For more than three years now, we’ve been tracking the same eight items across six of the leading supermarkets – Asda, Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury’s – in a bid to help people try and cut down on how much they are spending during the cost of living.
This week, Asda’s basket comes to a total of £12.93 and is the cheapest of the six, despite the fact that the cost of its 500g mince has gone up by 6p from last week. Lidl is now in second place with a cost of £12.96 after cutting the cost of its 420g tin of baked beans by a penny.
It means Aldi is now in third place on our list and it’s all down to those Lidl beans. Their basket of the same eight items comes to £12.97. None of the supermarket’s prices have changed from last week.
The biggest price hike this week comes in the form of Sainsbury’s, where their own-brand Stamford Street Co. instant coffee has gone up by a whopping 32p to £2.30 from £1.98. As a result, they have become the most expensive out of the six this week for the same eight items.
It is important to highlight that a number of supermarkets have disagreed with our comparison. Aldi has said that the list doesn’t take into account the difference in quality, insisting, for example, that its own Diplomat Red Label tea bags and its coffee are ‘higher quality’ than the comparative products used. The supermarket says its tins of beans are also heavier than some of the others.

An Aldi spokesperson added: “Our promise to customers is that they will make significant savings every time they shop with Aldi, which is why we’ve been named Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for four years running.”
When it comes to meat however, our comparison includes the cheapest packs of mince from each place and at Aldi and Lidl, along with Morrisons, it’s a 25% fat pack, whereas the others sell 20% fat, which is seen as better quality.
