Manchester United were keen on signing Jarrad Branthwaite last summer and the interest in the Everton centre-back is reportedly still there
Everton manager David Moyes has dismissed claims that his club are resigned to the fact that Jarrad Branthwaite will be leaving the Toffees in the summer transfer window.
Last summer, MEN Sport reported that Branthwaite was one of United’s top centre-back targets ahead of the new season. However, an agreement on a transfer fee was never forthcoming as Erik ten Hag looked to bolster his defence.
In the end, United decided to splash the cash on teenager Leny Yoro and Branthwaite would stay on Merseyside.
After a groin injury disrupted the beginning of his campaign, the 22-year-old managed to establish himself at the heart of the Everton defence which has fuelled speculation that he could be bound for an exit this summer.
The Sun report that despite Ten Hag being replaced by Ruben Amorim this season, the Portuguese head coach maintains an interest in Branthwaite.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keeping an eye on alternatives for Cristian Romero should he choose to leave at the end of the season.
With all this speculation hovering over the defender and his club, Moyes sent a defiant message to reporters on Friday about the future of Branthwaite.
“You have to remember Jarrad Branthwaite has got a three-year contract – two years and a year’s option so if anything Everton hold all the cards,” United’s ex-manager explained.
“But I also have to say over the journey over many years at Everton we had to sell players – from Wayne Rooney to Mikel Arteta to Joleon Lescott. It’s part of being a football manager, especially at certain clubs on the journey when you have to sell to try and build as well.
“But Jarrad is not a player I would want to lose, that’s for sure.” United were told last year that Branthwaite would cost them in excess of £70m should they wish to sign him.
If that valuation remains intact this summer, then the Reds could have a fight on their hands to get the deal over the line.
United have a number of areas that need improving and after heavy investment in the defence recently, £70m+ for Branthwaite may not be available.
