Latest Manchester United news as Ruben Amorim’s side squandered a late lead in the first leg of their Europa League clash with Lyon
Alejandro Garnacho has spoken out for the first time since his frustrating performance in Manchester United’s draw with Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final first-leg.
The forward started in Ruben Amorim’s starting XI on Thursday night in France but was unable to make an impact. He was replaced in the 83rd minute by Kobbie Mainoo, who impressed upon his return from injury.
Garnacho did manage to complete all 13 of his passes but missed a big chance from close range in the second-half. However, he lost the majority of his duels and was dispossessed four times.
Criticism has come his way for his lack of quality on the counter for United in France, with some suggesting Andre Onana’s performance taking away from the Argentine’s struggle.
The game in Lyon ended Garnacho’s run of assists in the Europa League after the 20-year-old created goals against FCSB and Real Sociedad. His place in Amorim’s team remains in doubt with Mainoo and Mason Mount back from injury.
Following the draw against Lyon in the first-leg, Garnacho took to social media to post a message to the United supporters. Alongside an image of the team photo prior to kick-off, he wrote: “Half time *emoji face with steam coming out of nose*. Work to do at Old Trafford next week.”
Garnacho is one of the players that has struggled to impress under Amorim at United despite some performances offering encouragement under the Portuguese head coach. “That is clear but we need to have results,” Amorim stressed.
“We are talking about the performance. We are improving, we are being consistent, that is clear, but we need to win.
“We had the game under control. The last play before the goal was one play where we want to make the third goal, sometimes you can keep the ball. But I like that energy from the team to score another goal.
“But that can happen and we need to focus on changing that next Thursday.”
