Quick overview:
Two moor fires remain ongoing, with dozens of firefighters at the scene
Fire crews were continuing to battle two fierce moorland blazes on Friday lunchtime (April 11) – as temperatures in Greater Manchester are set to soar higher than Barcelona in Spain.
Dozens of firefighters remain stationed at an area of woodland off Woodhead Road in Glossop, and on land surrounding March Haigh Reservoir in Marsden, near to Denshaw.
A third moorland blaze near Tor Hill in Haslingden, Lancashire, on Thursday night has now been put out.
It comes as Manchester is set to bask in temperatures hotter than Barcelona on Friday – with the mercury set to soar to 20C as the weekend approaches. The high temperatures, however, lead to tinder-dry surface conditions on moorlands, with fire services across the north west issuing warnings of barbecues and moor safety.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said in a new statement: “Firefighters are continuing to tackle a wildfire in woodland off the A628 Woodhead Road near Glossop. Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service was first called to the fire at 6.57pm yesterday (Thursday, April 10).
“Attending crews were from Glossop, New Mills, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Bradwell, Hathersage, Whaley Bridge, along with water carriers from Buxton and Clay Cross, and the Mountain Rescue drone unit.
“Firefighting continued late into the evening until darkness, with four crews returning to the scene shortly after 6.30am this morning (Friday 11 April). The fire involves approximately 4,000 square metres of woodland and conifer.
“The A628 was closed yesterday between the A57 at Hollingworth and the A616 at Flouch but has since reopened.”
Firefighters were called out to March Haigh Reservoir in Marsden, near to Denshaw, at around 5pm on Thursday.
Some crews worked through the night, while others returned to the scene before dawn.
A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Six wildfire crews are at the scene using beaters, blowers and argocats to tackle the fire, which continues to burn. We are working with support of our partners including the RSPB and the National Trust.
“The public are being asked to continue to avoid the area.
Crews in Lancashire, meanwhile, dealt with a fire at Tor Hill, Haslingden, on Thursday night – one of three moor fires affecting areas near Manchester.
A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At 8.30pm on April 10, 2025, two fire engines from Haslingden and Bacup along with the drone team, wildfire units from Bacup and Rawtenstall with the Haagland and beaver tail specialist appliances all responded to a moorland fire on Tor Hill, Haslingden.
“The fire consisted of 150 square metres of scorched grassland which was extinguished using three aqualeader backpacks and three leaf blowers. Fire crews were on scene for 35 minutes.” That blaze is now out.
