A cleaning expert has shared a simple method that will freshen up your bedding in just a few hours
As a household item we use every day, duvets can quickly become dirty and smelly. But because of their bulkiness, it can be difficult to fit them in the washing machine.
A cleaning expert has now shared another solution that will make them ‘cleaner than ever’ without wrestling with the washer. Steven Szary from My Luxury Sleep Shop suggests that instead of dealing with a waterlogged duvet, it’s best to let the sunshine do the hard work.
Steven explained: “Leave your duvet out for several hours (four to five is about right) and it’s best to do it in the late afternoon or early evening when the sun isn’t too harsh. A little bit of sun is good though as it helps to kill unwanted bacteria and germs.”
Bathing your bedding in sunlight is quite effective thanks to UV rays acting as a natural sanitiser, removing bacteria and those pesky dust mites that lurk within.
Over the warmer months, it’s crucial to air out our duvets as they accumulate sweat, oils, and dust – and failing to freshen them up runs the risk of mould.
By allowing your duvet to hang outside, you’re allowing more air and warmth to pass through its fibres, refreshing the plumpness of your duvet for a cosier night’s sleep, reports the Express.
First of all, you should ensure you choose a day that is warm and breezy, where there has been no rain for a few days.
Steven advised: “If it’s cloudy or has rained recently, the air will be more humid and will not be as effective for airing out your bedding.”
Once the weather is just right, take your duvet outdoors in the late afternoon. The softer sunlight at this time of day will safeguard the fabric and prevent your duvet from turning rigid.
Before hanging it up, give your duvet a gentle shake. Once it’s securely hung, lightly beat the fabric.
This action will help to fluff up the duvet fibres and prevent the filling from clumping together.
Ideally, you should hang your duvet on a clothesline to dry out. However, if that’s not an option, a drying rack, fence or any clean surface will suffice, provided you can secure the duvet properly.
The final step is to let your duvet bask in the sun for four to five hours. After this period, your duvet will be revitalised and sanitised, ready for you to enjoy a more restful night’s sleep.
