Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was at fault for Lyon’s opener in the Europa League
Robbie Savage has slammed Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana after the Cameroonian was at fault for Lyon’s opening goal during their Europa League first-leg.
It was an even opening 25 minutes in France but a needless foul from Noussair Mazraoui allowed a great crossing opportunity for Paulo Fonseca’s side. Thiago Almada’s in-swinging delivery beat everyone attacking it and Onana couldn’t keep out the bouncing effort as it escaped his grasp before squirming into the top corner.
There was already plenty of scrutiny on the United shot-stopper after a pre-match war of words with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic.
And the error from the former Inter Milan goalkeeper failed to silence the critics.
Speaking on the commentary for TNT Sports, Savage didn’t hold back.
“It’s a goalkeeping error,” he began.
“It’s a good ball in, great area, is Onana anticipating a touch? We’ll see it here, everyone looks onside there, it’s a terrible goalkeeping error, it bounces just before him, he’s got to save that, it’s a poor goalkeeping error.
“It looks like a good delivery, terrible goalkeeping.
“The ball is put into a great area, United held a high line, dropped as the ball is kicked and the bounce just before Onana, he’s expecting a touch but he has to save it.
“It will go down as a goalkeeping error. We can watch it so many times but it’s an error.”
Onana added fuel to the fire going into their Europa League knockout tie in Lyon. Speaking ahead of the quarter-final, he claimed that United are “way better” than their counterparts.
“It’s a very good team. We know some of them but I don’t think we have to focus on them,” he said.
“It’s more about us, what we’re going to do.
“I think we are better than them, we just have to go there and show who we are.
“If we go there with a winning mentality and we are focused, stay compact and together and we follow the game plan we will be winning the game.
“Of course, it’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them.
“We all know the importance of this game, we will go there with the winning mentality, it’s not our best season but we still have something to win and we will go for it.”
As a result, it sparked a response from Matic who hit back: “If you’re one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history then you need to take care of what you are talking about.
“If David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar said that I would question myself but if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s modern history, he needs to show that before he says it.”
