Manchester United will look to take an advantage back to Old Trafford as they take on French side Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night (8pm kick-off).

United have made the journey to France, but injury has seen several players left at home. Ruben Amorim will be without six players for the game through injury.

Centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has been left out of the squad after suffering an injury during the 1-0 loss against Nottingham Forest last week. Although he was able to complete that game, the defender was left out of the squad for the weekend’s Manchester derby, and has now been left out of the travelling squad for the trip to Lyon.

United will be without another three defenders due to injury. Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez and Jonny Evans are all continuing their recovery at home.

The former suffered his injury during the 3-0 win over Leicester City before the international break. But the injury is not as bad as first feared and he should be back available before the end of the season.

There is more uncertainty over Evans, who has not been seen since being an unused substitute for the Premier League clash against Wolves on Boxing Day. Meanwhile, Martinez is set to miss the rest of the season as he recovers from a cruciate ligament injury suffered at the start of February.

Midfielder Toby Collyer has also been left out of the travelling squad, after it was revealed that he would miss a few weeks with a small injury. One player who is stepping up his recovery is Amad, with there being hope that he can return before the end of the season, this game will however come too soon.

Lyon, meanwhile, suffered a big injury blow in the build up to the match with confirmation that winger Ernest Nuamah has suffered a cruciate ligament injury. The 21-year-old managed just seven minutes in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Lille, with the club since confirming the extent of the injury which will rule him out for the remainder of the season.

The game will also come too soon for fellow winger Malick Fofana. The 20-year-old has missed the last two league games with a knee injury.

He is said to be stepping up his recovery, but is not expected to make a comeback until the end of the month, meaning he will miss the clash against United.

Fofana has scored a total of 10 goals and provided a further five assists in 35 appearances in all competitions so far this season, including six goals in nine Europa League appearances.
