A home and garden expert has shared a clever tip to keep ants at bay

With spring in full swing, gardeners are starting to prepare their outdoor spaces into havens for the summer. But with the warmer weather often comes a persistent issue with unwanted insects – ants.

Whilst many might be tempted to reach for chemicals to tackle this issue, these chemicals can have dangerous consequences for the health of their soil.

Gardening gurus Thompson and Morgan urge caution when considering chemical solutions for ants, noting: “They only work if you apply them while also destroying the entire nest – which could extend a long way underground and cause major upheaval to your garden”.

There is, however, a common household item that can help ants flee from your garden without toxic repercussions, reports Devon Live.

Home and gardening influencer Molly Miller has shared a simple yet effective non-toxic technique to keep ants away from your grass utilising nothing more than a basic item from your bathroom – a bar of soap.

Molly explains: “The best non-toxic waste to keep bugs away. Use an old cheese grater to grate up a bar of Irish Spring soap, then sprinkle it through your flower beds to keep pests out.”

Moreover, she also recommends using it in your home to keep ants and other insects away.

She advises: “You can even use the bar itself to drag along your door frames to deter bugs from entering.”

Irish Spring soap’s formula combines pest-repelling picaridin with a refreshing citrus scent that hampers pests’ ability to detect plants, ultimately keeping them at bay.

Ants, in particular, are known to detest pungent smells and actively avoid natural deterrents such as citrus, vinegar and peppermint.

Sharing another practical suggestion, Molly stated: “Sprinkle a little ground cinnamon around your deck and patio to deter ants and bees.

“I even like to mix it with water and then spray down the areas where we spend the most time.”

In addition, the specialists at Diamond Pest Control reveal that sprinkling cinnamon along ants’ trails can be an effective method for banishing them from your garden, as well as dusting it into crevices and cracks where ants are spotted.
