Latest Manchester United transfer news as Liam Delap’s return to Manchester looks more likely following the emergence of his release clause

Liam Delap’s release clause at Ipswich Town will drop to £30million if Kieran McKenna’s side are relegated from the Premier League this season, it has been reported.

The striker is understood to be the priority for Manchester United this summer as Ruben Amorim looks to strengthen his attack for next season.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have both struggled to find the back of the net as much as the club would have hoped. Neither striker has been able to cement their spot in United’s strongest XI to leave Amorim scrambling for a new centre-forward.

Viktor Gyokeres has been a long-term target for United alongside Matheus Cunha and Victor Osimhen. However, the Daily Mail and ESPN recently claimed that Delap has replaced them as the number one target at Old Trafford.

Delap has scored 12 goals in 33 appearances in his breakout campaign since leaving Manchester City in the summer. Ipswich paid £15million plus £5m in add ons last summer but their likely relegation almost guarantees a move away from Portman Road.

The Guardian has revealed that the release clause in Delap’s contract at Ipswich will drop to £30m once their relegation to the Championship is confirmed. McKenna’s men are currently 12 points behind 17th placed Wolves with seven games to go.

The Manchester Evening News understands that the news of Delap’s relegation release clause is accurate, meaning United could sign one of their priority targets at a potentially bargain price.

£30m is significantly lower than the fee needed to sign Gyokeres or Cunha this summer meaning it could work out to be a great piece of business for United. PSR concerns mean Amorim’s transfer budget rests solely on their success in the Europa League and how much they can raise via player sales.

However, it’s also suggested that Chelsea are lining-up a move for the England Under-21 international this summer. Newcastle United, depending on Alexander Isak’s future, and Liverpool have also been credited with interest.
