A teaching assistant died after being hit by a van following an alleged ‘altercation’, an inquest opening has heard. Paul Bowles, 50, died following an incident at the Elk Mill roundabout on Broadway, Chadderton, Oldham, on March 26.

A murder investigation was launched. An inquest into Mr Bowles’ death was opened at Rochdale Coroners’ Court on Wednesday (April 9).

Coroners’ officer Emma Campbell told the hearing: “He [Paul] has noticed a white van close to his vehicle. An altercation has ensued. They exited their vehicles and a physical altercation has begun.”

Ms Campbell said the other driver then got back in his van, adding: “The driver of the vehicle has driven at Paul, knocking him over. Paul sadly passed away at the scene.”

Mr Bowles, from Royton, Oldham, was identified by his wife, the court heard. A man has since been charged with murder, the hearing was told. Area coroner Catherine McKenna adjourned the inquest until September.

Greater Manchester Police previously said Andrew Robson had been charged with murder. The 32-year-old, of Fold Green, Chadderton, appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on March 29.

The case was heard at Minshull Street Crown Court on March 31, having earlier been adjourned. Mr Robson will next appear on May 6.

GMP said in an earlier statement on Mr Bowles: “His family have described him as a kind, loving, family man and true gentleman who always put others before himself. He was intelligent and quick-witted, had a brilliant mind and generous heart. Paul will be missed greatly by all his family and friends.”

Mr Bowles worked at St Anne’s CofE Lydgate Primary School in Saddleworth. He is listed on the school’s website as an ‘LSA’, learning support assistant. A PTA Facebook post read: “Our whole school community is devastated by the loss of our much-loved teacher Mr Bowles.

“He was a very special man who was adored by our pupils, past and present. We will be working closely with school in the coming weeks to arrange a fitting memorial for Mr Bowles, but right now our thoughts are with his family. “
