The former Reds goalkeeper has quickly become a fans’ favourite at Fiorentina

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has enjoyed a first full season at Fiorentina – and the club are reportedly keen to extend his contract.

De Gea’s 12-year spell at Old Trafford was brought to an end in the summer of 2023, when the Spaniard left upon the expiry of his contract. He had originally been set to be offered a new contract but United chiefs changed their minds.

The 34-year-old spent a year without a club before joining Fiorentina last summer. He signed a one-year contract reportedly worth €1.2 million (£1 million), but the agreement included an option to extend his stay with a doubled salary, according to Football Italia.

Spanish newspaper Marca now reports that Fiorentina have been delighted with his attitude both on and off the pitch and have ‘already communicated’ their desire to trigger the clause in his contract for another season.

Calcio Mercato (via Football Italia), meanwhile, add that De Gea is set to meet with Fiorentina’s chiefs in the coming weeks to discuss his future.

President Rocco Commisso recently expressed his wish to see De Gea remain at the club beyond the summer. He said: “The intention is to keep players like De Gea and Fagioli but I don’t want to say more. We’ll see if they also want to stay, so we can start next year with an even stronger team.”

In a recent interview with newspaper La Repubblica, De Gea said: “I just wanted to take it easy for a while after playing at the highest levels for many years. Perhaps, it was the best period of my life.

“I could finally enjoy time with my family and friends whom I had seen little in the past 15 years. I travelled between Madrid and Manchester, continuing to train my mind and body. I’m happy in Florence and at Fiorentina, but first we need to finish the season in the best possible way.

“The city is wonderful, and the people are amazing. The club has a unique history, and the Franchi excites me.”

The Spaniard has become one of the favourite players among the fans. De Gea, who has made 10 key saves in 29 Serie A appearances, has been one of the most decisive goalkeepers in the league.

His performances have played a significant role in helping Fiorentina reach eighth place in the table.
