Striker Chido Obi was on the bench for the Manchester derby last weekend and started for the Under-21s on Monday.
Chido Obi scored twice for Manchester United’s Under-21s against Nottingham Forest on Monday night.
The U21s drew 3-3 with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League 2 at Leigh Sports Village, surrendering a two-goal advantage in the final 10 minutes of the contest to share the points with the visitors.
Obi netted a brace to send United into a 3-1 lead, and his brilliantly taken second goal has gone viral on social media, as he picked up the ball with his back to the goal near the halfway line.
Obi turned his marker, drove into space and found the bottom left corner with a superb finish.
It was a wonderful solo goal and Obi has now scored 14 goals in 14 academy appearances this season. The 17-year-old has predominantly played for the Under-18s, but he made his third appearance for the U21s against Nottingham Forest.
Obi made his first-team debut against Tottenham Hotspur in February and the youngster made two more substitute appearances against Everton and Fulham (FA Cup fifth round).
Ruben Amorim has also included Obi in Premier League matchday squads against Ipswich Town, Arsenal and Manchester City, but he was an unused substitute in each of those games.
Obi was given the opportunity to play for the U21s on Monday night because he didn’t play a part in the Manchester derby, which ended in a goalless stalemate, on Sunday afternoon.
The head of the academy, Nick Cox, recently spoke to the Manchester Evening News about signing Obi.
“Occasionally you get moments like this,” said Cox about the transfer. “Arsenal are a wonderful club. They deliver a great program and develop great players. For one reason or another, and it’s for Chido and his family to know why, they felt the best opportunities for him may rest away from Arsenal.
“Because he holds a Danish passport, the whole of Europe was open to Chido. We quite simply became aware of the fact that Chido was about to make a move to Europe. He’d been to visit a club and identified the club where he was going to potentially end up. We thought if this player is available and is looking to leave, then we should make every effort we possibly can to sign him.”
