Quick overview:
The Food Standards Agency said the wheat content is ‘a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or with coeliac disease’
Jeremy Clarkson’s premium beer brand has recalled two of its products from sale because of ‘undeclared’ gluten. Cotswold Brewing Company, of which he is a director, has recalled Hawkstone Black and Hawkstone Spa Lager amid fears the wheat content could affect anyone with an allergy or intolerance to gluten.
The former Top Gear presenter and veteran journalist teamed up with the family-owned company in 2021 to launch premium beer brand Hawkstone which uses barley grown at his Oxfordshire farm Diddly Squat. Its beers are sold in more than 500 pubs across the UK.
The company has apologised ‘for any inconvenience’. The alert only concerns the two named beers, and not others produced by the brewer.
In an alert on its website, the Food Standards Agency said: “The Cotswold Brewing Company Limited is recalling Hawkstone Black and Hawkstone Spa Lager because they contain undeclared wheat (gluten) which is not mentioned on the label. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or with coeliac disease.”
It added a ‘risk statement’ which read: “This product contains wheat (gluten) making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or with coeliac disease.”
It issued the following advice to consumers: “If you have bought any of the above products and have an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or with coeliac disease, do not consume them. Instead return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund. For more information, please contact [email protected] or call 01451 824488.”
The withdrawn products are 440ml cans of Hawkstone Black and 330ml cans of Hawkstone Spa Lager.
In notice publish posted as part of the FSA alert, The Cotswold Brewing Company apologised for ‘any inconvenience caused’ and said: “Customer safety is of paramount importance to The Cotswold Brewing Company Limited and we take all issues regarding the production of our products extremely seriously.”
