A tip near Wigan has been evacuated after a fire broke out.

Two fire engines rushed out to Slag Lane household waste recycling centre, in Lowton, at around 11.30am today (April 7).

The site was evacuated as the blaze broke out, with the facility still closed to both staff and the public this afternoon.

A cordon remains in place at the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 11.30am on Monday, April 7, two fire engines from Wigan and Hindley fire stations attended a fire at the household recycling centre on Slag Lane, Lowton.

“Firefighters created a cordon and used one cooling jet to disperse the vapours from a cylinder gas in the area.

“Crews are still in attendance at this time, with the site currently remaining closed to the public and members of staff.”

It’s not yet known how long the facility will remain closed for.
