Defender Leny Yoro has revealed head coach Ruben Amorim is urging him to become more adventurous with the ball and support Manchester United’s build-up play.

The Frenchman started on the left of the back-three on Sunday as United drew 0-0 with Manchester City at Old Trafford, securing their second clean sheet in their last three Premier League outings.

Yoro was deployed in defence alongside Harry Maguire, who replaced the injured Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui. The former Lille man did not put a foot wrong defensively, making three interceptions and one clearance.

With the ball, he was particularly bright, boasting a passing accuracy of 89 per cent after completing 39 of his 44 attempted passes. And he admitted post-match that he is being encouraged to help United build up from the back by Amorim.

Speaking to MUTV, Yoro said: “We need to control the game. If I can bring the ball forward for the strikers, for the midfielders, it is good for us, so I try to do it.

“Yes, the coach has asked me to do it, I am ready to do it and I can do it.”

Signed from Lille last July, Yoro has grown into his first season at United after a pre-season injury meant his competitive debut for the club was delayed until December. He is of the opinion he is improving.

He continued: “I think in every game I try to be better. I had a little bit of adaptation when I came, but now it is better in every game. I try to help the team and try to be at 100 per cent.”

Yoro also believes one of the key things to his and United’s improvements will be developing on-field relationships.

“We have to have a good relationships between us,” Yoro added. “I try to speak with the guys near to me.

“I try to speak with Patrick [Dorgu], with Garna [Alejandro Garnacho], with Harry [Maguire] and with Casa [Casemiro]. Everyone was near to me so that was the most important thing in the game.

“If you don’t communicate in the game, it’s difficult.”
