Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has said consistency will be the key to the club making the progress it craves following Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City.

The 196th instalment of the Manchester derby finished goalless at Old Trafford. Both teams had chances, the best of which were produced in the second half, but neither United nor City experienced a sustained spell of pressure that led to a plethora of opportunities being created.

For United, the result ensured they have taken four points off City this season, which is four more than they secured against their cross-city rivals last season.

Having stepped up against one of the Premier League’s better sides again, amid previous draws with Arsenal and Liverpool, Fernandes has acknowledged what United must do to continue improving, suggesting they must take more points against the lesser teams.

“It is not these games that will define us, it is the other ones,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “Whenever we play big teams, we know that pressure is always there. There is so much attention and everyone is so sharp in everything we do.

“We just have to make that click. If we want to be a big club like City is being, like Liverpool is being, we need to do that consistently.

“We have to see it [how far off that is]. If we carry on doing what we did today, with scoring goals, we will be close. But if after today we just relax and think this is enough, we go back again.

“The main focus now is to do this consistently.”

United have now failed to score in 12 Premier League games this season. Fernandes insists their record in front of goal has got to improve.

“I am happy with the performance, not the result,” Fernandes added. “We want to win games and we need points in the league, we are aware of that.

“We played against a very good side. I think the game was there for both teams and we grew a little bit more dangerous, created more opportunities, we just need to have the killer instinct to get the goals.”
