Viktor Gyokeres delivered another statement performance for Sporting CP during the first leg of their Portuguese Cup semi-final against Rio Ave.

Gyokeres was named player of the match after their 2-0 home win at the Jose Alvalade Stadium. The striker scored their second goal in first-half added-time after dinking a penalty down the middle and extending their winning streak to six games across all competitions.

That was the Sweden international’s eighth goal in his last five games, alongside two assists. After returning to form in March, Gyokeres has scored or set up ten of Sporting’s 14 goals over the past month.

Their head coach, Rui Borges – who replaced their in-house successor to Ruben Amorim, the Sporting CP B head coach Joao Pereira late last year – is already running out of ways to describe Gyokeres.

“There are no adjectives for Viktor; he is an extraordinary forward,” Borges said after the win.

“He has helped the team to grow, and he gives confidence to his teammates. He trains like the rest.

“Above all, he is a focused player who pays attention to the details; he’s competitive, never lets his guard down and doesn’t want to rest. Maybe he could have rested today.

“He is a different player; he is clearly the best in our league. It is a young team, and as an athlete, player and teammate, he inspires confidence in his teammates with what he brings to the team.”

However, despite reported interest from Manchester United in reuniting Amorim with the centre-forward, it is reputed that Arsenal will sign the Swede. Gyokeres has purportedly already chosen to join them during the summer transfer window.

The new Arsenal sporting director, Andrea Berta, is said to have proved decisive in prioritising the striker over alternatives such as Alexander Isak or Benjamin Sesko.

Berta permanently replaced Edu Gaspar, who resigned in November – late last month, taking over from Jason Ayto, who stepped up from being their assistant sporting director on an interim basis.
