FRANCO FRIDAYS Meets JOKER WEEK!

Welcome to JOKER WEEK! One of the greatest characters in comics history debuted 85 years ago, in Batman #1, on April 24, 1940 — and we’re celebrating with a series of features saluting the Clown Prince of Crime, just like we did with CATWOMAN WEEK. Jokes. Who’s got ‘em?

Interesting fact. You are always looking at your nose. Your brain just chooses to ignore it. OK. It’s a weird statement to open with. How about this one: Why so serious?

If I say, “Why so serious?” you know exactly what I’m talking about. This quote came from the Joker in The Dark Knight.

A slightly less well-known quote from that same movie is, “I believe whatever doesn’t kill you, simply makes you stranger,” and it is the far more memorable one for me. It may sound kind of like a downer statement but I mean it in the brightest sense of the words.

Back to the insanity for a moment.

We live in a time right now where we’ve been lucky enough to have many iterations of characters, Joker being one of them. All the different versions from the minds of all the very talented writers and artists. I even got to meet Jerry Robinson briefly. Quite a thrill for me! The creator of the Joker (or at least, one of them).

And then we also have the live-action versions: Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger… an amazing time we live in.

I always thought, “The Joker is insane. Why does Batman keep him around?” I’m not even talking about the modern day psychopath Jokers. I want to talk about the most insane Joker ever.  I want to go all the way back to the 1966 TV Joker. What is with that guy?

Wait. Does he cover his mustache with white makeup? You may not have caught it at first, but eventually you notice the mustache. That’s insane!

Anyone would just shave that thing, but not this guy. A clever ruse, I tell you. Imagine being in the middle of an altercation with this maniac and then you notice the ‘stache and you’re distracted for the rest of the fight, trying to catch a glimpse of whether it is real or not, instead of landing a solid right hook.

OK, you can’t see your own nose but you can definitely see someone else’s nose. And their mustache underneath it. Unless it’s covered in clown makeup.

Some greatest detective Batman is. Never once did he point it out. Or did he notice too late like I did and then was too embarrassed to say anything? Yeah. That’s probably what it was.

Happy Friday!
