A man was tragically mauled to death by a pack of dogs as he made a desperate bid to escape through a window in his final moments a coroner’s court heard.

Nicholas Glass, aged 33, had taken on the responsibility of looking after two XL bullies, an American bulldog, and a mixed-breed Staffordshire terrier for his brother who was hospitalised at the time. However, police were called to his Birmingham home when the dogs were spotted on the loose in the vicinity.

Officers subsequently discovered Mr Glass’ body in the backyard of his residence. At an inquest held at Birmingham Coroner’s Court, evidence suggested that Mr Glass likely tried to flee from the animals by exiting through a window but succumbed to blood loss before reaching safety.

His body displayed multiple traumatic injuries, including a severe gash to his left eye and various puncture wounds around his feet and legs, reports the Express.

Birmingham Assistant Coroner Adam Hodson, delivering a narrative verdict, confirmed that two dogs were promptly seized while the remaining pair were retrieved by authorities days subsequent to the event. The coroner clarified that Mr Glass’ demise was caused by blunt force trauma inflicted by numerous bites from the dogs.

Coroner Hodson said: “This appears to have been a terrible tragedy. It appears to me Nicholas was a caring brother and son who simply offered to look after his brother’s dogs while his brother was in hospital.

“He sadly lost his life as a terrible consequence. I am satisfied on the balance of probabilities that Nicholas was bitten by more than one of his brother’s dogs.”

He noted, “There is no evidence as to which breed of dog was responsible.”

The investigator suggested that Mr. Glass might have been assaulted inside the residence, escaped through a window, and concealed himself behind a fence panel before ultimately “succumbing to his injuries.”

It’s also reported that the victim’s cries for help could have been audible. At the time of the incident, it was noted that neither of the XL Bullies discovered had the required exemption certificate, despite the recent change in legislation.

In a heartfelt tribute released through the police last month, Mr. Glass’s family expressed their grief, saying: “In Nicholas, we’ve lost a loving son, brother and uncle who was adored by all of his family and friends.

“He was kind-hearted, caring and compassionate and he’d do anything for anyone. We are devastated at his loss and we all miss him desperately.”
