Quick overview:
The latest Athletic Bilbao injury news as Manchester United prepare to face Ernesto Valverde’s team in the Europa League semi-finals next week.
Manchester United face a make-or-break showdown against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League.
Ruben Amorim’s side are no longer focusing on domestic matters with their lowly Premier League position of 14th meaning they cannot qualify for Europe through the league. It means that winning the Europa League is their only chance of saving a desperately poor campaign.
Victory over two legs against Ernesto Valverde’s side will seal a place in the final on May 21 where they would face either Tottenham Hotspur or Bodo/Glimt. Amorim’s men would then have the chance to qualify for next season’s Champions League if they emerge victorious.
Below is the latest on Bilbao’s injury situation ahead of their huge semi-final clash against United…
Nico Williams
The biggest concern for Bilbao has been the absence of Nico Williams. The 22-year-old is one of Europe’s brightest talents and is his club’s second-top goalscorer and joint-second-top assister this term.
But in a huge boost for Bilbao, Williams appears to be available for selection again. The Basque outfit has named the Spain international in their starting line-up for Wednesday evening’s clash against Las Palmas in La Liga.
Speaking about Williams in his press conference following defeat to Real Madrid on Sunday, Bilbao boss Valverde said: “It’s something he’s been carrying for a short time and it didn’t come on suddenly.
“We hope to recover for these upcoming matches. It’s true that the season is long and we have to get to the end.
“We’re in the final stretch and it shows because we always have to be at 100%, but physically, my team is a guarantee.”
Oihan Sancet
Midfielder Oihan Sancet came off injured after 22 minutes during Wednesday’s clash against Las Palmas.
The 24-year-old has been a key player for Bilbao this season with 17 goals and three assists across all competitions. Whether he will be fit for the clash against United remains unclear.
Yuri Berchiche
Left-back Yuri Berchiche is another player Bilbao have had to take caution with lately.
On April 9, he lasted 34 minutes in a La Liga clash with Villarreal before succumbing to a ‘moderate’ calf injury. He would go on to miss both legs against Rangers and the fixture that fell in between against Rayo Vallecano.
Valverde opted to keep the 35-year-old on the bench for the entirety of the match against Real Madrid, but he will start in Wednesday’s match against Las Palmas, which is directly before Man United’s visit.
Yeray Alvarez
Yeray Alvarez, a central defender, has suffered persistent fitness issues throughout 2025 so far. Attempts are being made to manage this ahead of the Europa League semi-finals.
Most recently, preventing him from playing against Villarreal earlier this month was an adductor issue, though the 30-year-old returned to play both legs of the quarter-final against Rangers.
In the middle he remained benched vs Rayo and the same happened on Easter Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu. He has been named in Valverde’s starting 11 against Las Palmas.
