The BBC’s Race Around the World returns on Wednesday night (April 22), but who narrates the series and where do you know him from?

Back for its fifth season, the BAFTA-award winning series follows five teams as they compete to win a cash prize of £20,000.

Beginning at the Great Wall of China, the teams will travel over 14,000km across Asia in hopes of winning the series and making lifelong memories.

This season will see the teams racing through China, Nepal and India as they attempt to be the first team at finish line in Kanniyakumari, located at the southernmost tip of India.

The teams for this series consist of sisters Elizabeth and Letitia, former married couple Yin and Gaz, brothers Brian and Melvyn, teenage couple Fin and Sioned, and mother and son Caroline and Tom.

With phones and bank cards not allowed, the teams will have to rely on cash equating to the price of a normal flight to their destination.

Providing commentary on everything as it happens is Scottish actor John Hannah, a man who has appeared in a number of massive movies and TV shows.

The veteran actor, who turns 63 on Tuesday, began acting in the East Kilbride Rep Theatre Club while he completed his apprenticeship as an electrician.

Deciding that he wanted to pursue a career in acting, John was accepted into the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Initially landing parts in several plays, John received his big break as Matthew in the classic Hugh Grant romcom Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Getting bigger roles, including the titular role of the mystery-solving pathologist McCallum in the 1997 series, John played Gwyneth Paltrow’s love interest in 1998’s Sliding Doors.

Most people know John for his performances as Jonathan Carnahan in the beloved The Mummy trilogy.

Led by Oscar winner Brendan Fraser, John played the comic relief role of Rachel Weisz’ brother in the three films that grossed over $1 billion.

After proving himself in the Hollywood series of films, John went on to play Quintus Lentulus Batiatus in Spartacus: Blood and Sand and its prequel series.

Recent years have seen John playing a scientist in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and show up in the Black Mirror episode Loch Henry.

John earned rave reviews for his one scene in the first episode of HBO’s The Last of Us, playing an epidemiologist who warned of a potential global pandemic.

Outside of his acting career, John has been happily married to actress Joanna Roth since 1996. She has appeared alongside her husband in Rebus, the BBC One drama series New Street Law, and the film Sliding Doors. Together they share two children.

Despite all of the major productions John has been involved in, most of his fans will continue to talk about his vocal work on Race Across the World.

Race Across the World airs at 9pm on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer
