Here’s what you need to know:
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ star forward Matheus Cunha has a £62.5m release clause inserted into his current contract at Molineux
Manchester United have reportedly been handed another boost in their pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha this summer.
MEN Sport reported on Tuesday that Cunha is seen as a key target for the Reds as they look to bolster their attack. The Brazilian featured in his side’s 1-0 win over United at Old Trafford on Sunday and was seen communicating with Casemiro and Ruben Amorim during the fixture.
Having performed exceptionally for Wolves this season, with 16 goals registered in all competitions for the previously relegation-threatened side, it is unsurprising to see that interest is high in Cunha. Sky Sports News understands as many as five Premier League clubs are sounding out the 25-year-old.
It is claimed that Arsenal and Aston Villa have both held exploratory talks with Cunha’s representatives. Considering both clubs could be playing Champions League football next season, that could be a concern for United, especially with Europe far from a guarantee.
However, Sky Sports believe that United hold an advantage over their competitors. It is claimed that Cunha believes United to be one of the biggest clubs in world football, and their current position in the Premier League table is not seen as a detractor.
They add that one source close to Cunha believes the forward ‘loves United.’ This will undoubtedly be music to the ears of Amorim, who will be worried about the prospect of enticing players to Old Trafford considering the season the Reds have endured.
United sit in lowly 14th, and while they will not face the drop, they are unlikely to qualify for Europe through the Premier League this season. The Reds’ only hope of reaching Europe next season is by winning the Europa League.
Next month, United take on Athletic Bilbao for a spot in the final, where they will face either Tottenham Hotspur or Bodo/Glimt. Qualification for the Champions League would guarantee Amorim more money to play with in the summer, which would also be a relief, particularly as United will need to sell players before they can activate Cunha’s release clause.
