Chef and restaurateur Vikas Khanna has come to the defence of Gauri Khan’s restaurant, Torii, which recently made headlines after a food influencer accused the establishment of serving adulterated paneer. In his video, YouTuber Sarthak Sachdeva visited the Mumbai-based restaurant and purchased a paneer dish. He then conducted an iodine test on the cooked paneer and claimed that the paneer used at the restaurant – owned by Shah Rukh Khan’s wife – was adulterated. In an Instagram post, Michelin-starred chef Vikas Khanna, who shares a close relationship with the Khans, voiced strong concerns about the spread of food-related misinformation, particularly from self-proclaimed “food scientists” on platforms like YouTube. Khanna stated that he had never witnessed such alarming inaccuracies before. Regarding the YouTuber’s iodine test, he pointed out that iodine changes colour upon contact with many common ingredients such as potatoes, rice, bread, cornflour, flour, and unripe bananas—none of which indicate adulteration.
Khanna warned that such misleading demonstrations can cause dangerous misconceptions about food safety and cross-contamination. “It’s scary that unqualified people are taken seriously,” he wrote, urging the public to be wary of trusting unverified sources. Torii’s Response to Sarthak Sachdeva’s Claim
Following the viral spread of Sarthak Sachdeva’s video, Torii released an official statement refuting his claims. The statement read: “The iodine test reflects the presence of starch, not the authenticity of the paneer. As the dish contains soy-based ingredients, this reaction is expected. We stand by the purity of our paneer and the integrity of our ingredients at Torii.” Sarthak’s video has since been removed from both Instagram and YouTube.
