Quick overview:
But did madcap travel blogger Noel Philips bite off more than he can chew on his latest adventure?
A YouTuber took a 4,800 mile 12-hour flight from the US to Manchester – for a kebab at Wythenshawe’s Civic Centre. Noel Philips took a taxi to Baker’s chippy for his lunch and then took a flight straight back across the Atlantic.
The travel YouTuber, originally from Nottingham but now settled in America, has made a name for himself posting videos online about his adventures around the world, among them managing to fly around the world using only budget airlines.
His latest escapade took him from his home in Huston, Texas, to Manchester on Singapore Airline’s final direct flight between the two cities.
At the start of his 31-minute YouTube film, Phil began by lamenting the loss of Singapore Airlines’ five-times-a-week 4,800-mile flight SQ51 which has provided a link for people to travel between the north of England and Texas for the last 20 years. The decision to axe the service means people travelling between these two destinations will now have to fly via Heathrow airport in London.
Phil, originally from Nottingham but who has been living in Texas for the last three years, said he paid $1,020 for a ‘premium economy’ seat, not wanting to shell out $4,500 for business class when he enquired three days ahead of the service and then another £1,000 for the an upgrade once he arrived for the flight, meaning he bagged a business class seat for half price.
Before boarding at Houston, Phil, 40, told his 649,000 subscribers: “We’re going to head back to Manchester in search of something truly amazing – a proper chippie kebab!”
He added: “I had to do it one last time and do something cool with it. Let’s get that kebab.”
After touching down at Manchester Airport and wasting no time ahead of his flight back to the US four hours later, Phil hopped into a taxi and took a short ride to Mr Baker’s fish and chip shop at Wythenshawe’s Civic Centre, slightly worried a kebab might not actually be on the menu so early in the day.
But he was in luck.
A member of staff gave him the good news and expressed a little shock at how far this customer had come for his chicken kebab with everything on it. “Oh come on, seriously?!” he said as he prepared the dish which he served to his VIP customer on a plate rather than a plastic tray.
“I’ve flown 4,800 miles for this. It better be good and it better be worth it,” he said as he tucked into the kebab. Following a pregnant pause, his reaction seemed ever-so-slightly disappointed. No actual word was uttered but there was a rather dismissive ‘eh’.
Then he got straight back into another cab back to Terminal 2 in time for his flight back to Texas, this time with Aer Lingus via New York. When the final leg of his trip was delayed, he admitted ‘I may have bitten off more kebab than I can chew’.
When he finally landed back in Houston, Phil admitted his latest adventure had been ‘ridiculous’ but at least he had ‘one more story to tell’. He would ‘probably not’ be doing it again ‘unless someone maybe dared me to do something like that’, he said.
