A 12-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm
A tram stop was swarmed by police on Thursday (April 10) as youths ‘waved around’ what appeared to be a BB gun in front of mothers with prams.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a 12-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm, and that he had since been released on bail.
The arrest was made at Northern Moor tram stop, with the incident occurring at Wythenshawe Park, one stop away, on Thursday afternoon.
Local resident Ian David said he witnessed it as he was waiting for a tram to Chorlton.
“I noticed these lads come on to the platform,” the 61-year-old told the M.E.N. “They weren’t even teenagers – about twelve or thirteen – but I got the sense that there might be trouble.”
Ian said he saw one of the youths with what appeared to be a BB gun. “They were waving it around at the other side of the platform – where there was a couple of women with prams and babies in.”
“One woman started shouting at them but they just laughed and carried on.”
Ian then boarded the tram that arrived, as did the youths, but it stopped again at the next stop, Northern Moor, where all passengers had to get off again due to an apparent technical fault with the doors.
“Two more trams came by but they didn’t stop there,” said Ian. “So I think the police must have told them not to stop there because there was an offensive weapon that could pose a danger to the public.
“Then the police arrived and chased the boys along the platform, shouting ‘GET ON THE FLOOR’, and took them away.”
The M.E.N understands that the weapon was not fired, but that the youths were ‘waving it at the driver’.
