Quick overview:
A woman has shared a blind taste test of some of the UK’s top tea brands and was left surprised when one came out on top, despite it being a little more expensive than she’d usually go for
Happy National Tea Day! The annual celebration takes place on April 21 – and has been described by many as being “the most British day of the year”. It’s a time to celebrate everything to do with our beautiful brews – from booking an afternoon tea, to gifting teapots or simply enjoying a nice cuppa with your loved ones.
So in the spirit of the festivity, we’ve been on the hunt to find the best tea bag on the market. And a recent video by a TikToker called Becca provided some brilliant insight.
She compared affordable tea bags from Tesco supermarket to the iconic options available at PG Tips and Yorkshire Tea. Here are her brutally honest thoughts.
Becca, known on TikTok as @beccaeatseverything, often shares food reviews with her followers. She made it clear in her video that she conducted a “blind taste test” and did “not know which is which” before sipping the brew.
She began with Tesco Finest bag, priced at £2.40. She described it as “nice” with “strong flavours”, yet “not the best” she’s tasted, awarding it a solid 7/10.
PG Tips followed, costing £2, which Becca found had a “strange aftertaste”. She commented it seemed “cheap,” leading her to give it a lower score of 4/10.
Tesco Value, the cheapest at 55p, was deemed by Becca to have “ok flavour and strength” but was “on the bitter side”, earning it a score of 3/10.
Next was Tesco’s own brand at £1.10. Despite being twice the price of the Value option, was described as “very sour and bitter tasting”. It was ranked lowest by Becca, scoring a mere 1/10.
However, relief came with Yorkshire Tea, priced slightly higher at £2, which Becca praised for its “really nice flavours” and being “easy on the palate”.. She rated Yorkshire Tea an impressive 8.5/10, making it the top choice in her taste test.
Yorkshire Tea is another black tea blend that’s extremely popular here in the UK. It combines 10-20 different teas – including options from Assam, Kenya and Rwanda.
The brand is a firm favourite with celebrities like Alan Carr, Noel Gallagher and Sir Patrick Stewart – so we’re not surprised that Becca is a fan too.
Becca’s final tea rankings
- Tesco own brand – 1/10
- Tesco Value – 3/10
- PG Tips – 4/10
- Tesco Finest – 7/10
- Yorkshire Tea – 8.5/10
