A woman was rumbled trying to smuggle drugs into prison to pass them onto her then-boyfriend.

Jessica Ryan, 28, was visiting her partner Scott Clements, 37, while he was a prisoner at HMP Humber, in East Yorkshire.

Hull Crown Court heard how her plan backfired when an eagle-eyed prison officer spotted a suspicious package on the floor near to Ryan’s feet.

The package was seized and found to contain 11 Buprenorphine tablets – a synthetic opioid – and a small amount of cocaine.

Ryan and Clements both admitted being involved in conveying items into prison on February 12, 2023, Hull Live reports.

Prosecuting, Stephen Welch described how prison staff checked CCTV footage of the incident, which showed Ryan passing ‘small quantities’ of drugs to Clements.

Martin Scarman, mitigating, said that Ryan was visiting her then boyfriend and she accepted taking in the drugs that were ultimately found by prison officers.

“It’s a small amount,” said Mr Scarman. “There was some pressure put on her. There was some naivete by her. There was no expectation of any gain for her.

“She was simply doing what she was asked by her then partner. Her life has very much moved on. She is no longer with Clements.”

Jordan Parkinson, representing Clements, said that he did ask his then-girlfriend to bring in the drugs but he claimed that he did not put pressure on her to do so and he simply asked her if she had brought them.

“There was some influence on her to bring them in,” said Miss Parkinson. “He was simply getting drugs to be brought into the prison to consume himself.”

Clements was in prison at the time for drug supply matters and he had an entrenched drugs addiction at that point. “He realises that he should not have been getting anyone to bring them in,” said Miss Parkinson.

Father-of-four Clements was released from prison on September 10 last year and he had shown excellent compliance with the probation service, the court heard. He had been testing negative for drugs and was now an assistant bar manager at a nightclub.

“He has essentially turned his life around,” said Miss Parkinson. “He has managed to get his life on track since coming out. Everything is running smoothly in his life.”

Judge John Thackray KC told the pair: “Drugs in prison cause chaos. They increase violence and make the life of prison officers so much more difficult.”

He told Clements: “You were supposed to be there rehabilitating yourself, not putting pressure on your partner to bring in Class A drugs. You have a bad record and you have got a relevant record.”

Ryan, of Beachfield Drive, Hartlepool, was given a two-year suspended prison sentence, a nine-month 8pm to 7am curfew and 30 days’ rehabilitation. Sentence on Clements, of Suggitt Street, Hartlepool, was deferred until September 15 so that he can prove that he can stay out of trouble.
