Man United head coach Ruben Amorim has named an unchanged starting line-up for the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon.
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has suggested the XI he has picked for tonight’s Europa League quarter-final against Lyon has the capacity to control proceedings at the Groupama Stadium.
For the first time in his United tenure, Amorim has named the same XI for successive fixtures, refusing to tinker with the team that started Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City at Old Trafford.
It means captain Bruno Fernandes is once again set to start as one of the two No.10s and provide support to Rasmus Hojlund up front. Fernandes’ deployment as a No.10 means that Casemiro is once again set to partner Manuel Ugarte at the base of United’s midfield.
Amorim told MUTV: “We want to be a team that can control the games with possession, but we have proven already that we have a team that can control the game without the ball.
“We need to be a complete team, we need to be really focused in every detail of the game so that we are ready for the challenge.”
Amorim has been boosted by the return of Kobbie Mainoo, who has been named on the bench after missing the last ten games with a muscle issue. He has been joined on a strong-looking bench by the likes of Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee.
United must win the Europa League this season to try and salvage something from what has been a bitterly disappointing campaign. However, Amorim knows his team is in for a stern test this evening.
Asked if Lyon will provide the toughest test United have faced in Europe this season, Amorim added: “I think it is. Of course, when you play in the Premier League every week it is a big test. This team has some differences from Sociedad; it is really technical, its physical aspect is really good and they are improving in the league.
“This is going to be a big test for us.”
