Manchester United supporters are staging another protest against Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos at the Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers
Manchester United supporters held up banners towards the director’s box at Old Trafford to protest the club’s decision to move season ticket holders next season.
While watching today’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, you may have seen banners pointed towards the power makers at Old Trafford by a selection of supporters.
This is due to the club’s decision to uproot approximately 500 season ticket holders next season to make way for a premium hospitality area.
Defending their call, United explained that the decision was made to ‘reflect the high value of this unique location.’ They also claimed that they: “Appreciate the disruption this will cause those fans who currently sit there and we will be contacting them individually to ensure a suitable alternative seat is found.”
Unsurprisingly, this has been met poorly by those season ticket holders who are set to be moved. During the goalless draw with Manchester City, supporters staged their first protest against the decision and this has been repeated on Sunday.
One banner partially read: “Sir Jim, what has the club we love turned into? You know the price of everything and the value of nothing (especially loyalty).” When purchasing the minority stake in United was confirmed, Ratcliffe explained that he wanted to mend the relationship between the club and the fanbase.
However, cost-cutting measures taken to strengthen the club’s financial situation have proven unpopular, particularly the decision to cut hundreds of jobs in Manchester. Speaking in March, Ratcliffe insisted that he would walk away from the club if he suffers the same treatment as the Glazers.
“It [the abuse] can be unpleasant,” he told The Times. “And I’ve probably failed on the having fun front.
“I mean, I can put up with it for a while. I don’t mind being unpopular because I get that nobody likes seeing Manchester United down where they are, and nobody likes the decisions we’re having to make at the moment. If I draw a bit of the ire, I can put up with that.
“But I’m no different to the average person. It’s not nice, particularly for friends and family.
“So, eventually, if it reached the extent that the Glazer family have been abused, then I’d have to say, look, enough is enough guys, let somebody else do this. They can’t really come to a match, the Glazers.
“They’ve retreated into the shadows a bit now, so I’m getting all the b***** stick. We bought in and I haven’t seen them since.
“It’s: ‘Thank you, Jim, you’re doing a really good job.’ At the moment, I don’t have security, I don’t have to walk around like that.
“But it would defeat the object, wouldn’t it? You couldn’t tolerate it at that level, it just wouldn’t be fun.”
