Manchester United had a night to remember in more ways than one after beating Lyon 5-4 in the Europa League quarter-final at Old Trafford.

The victory against the French side came in the last minute of extra-time when Harry Maguire headed past goalkeeper Lucas Perri. United were 2-0 up after 70 minutes but Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico cancelled out goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot.

However, Tolisso’s sending off in the 89th minute handed the Reds a glimmer of hope. Despite being down to ten men, though, Lyon still managed to strike twice past Andre Onana.

Reds captain Bruno Fernandes then sparked the historic comeback, making no mistake from the penalty spot. The Portuguese midfielder’s goal was United’s 5,000th at Old Trafford since moving into the stadium 115 years ago

He is the highest-scoring current member of the squad, having netted 52 goals at the Theatre of Dreams. On the night, Fernandes also registered his 96th goal for United in 282 appearances to date.

Before leaving the stadium, the midfielder stopped to fulfil fans’ requests for a signature, a selfie, or both. If there has been any doubts, Fernandes certainly convinced supporters he is a great leader after his display against Lyon.

The 30-year-old was instrumental in setting up Manuel Ugarte’s opener and later unleashed a stunning volley that, unfortunately, struck the crossbar.

“I felt Bruno Fernandes was tired so I have to be careful with Bruno. I cannot promise but I will try,” Reds head coach Ruben Amorim said after the game.

Fernandes has started 31 of Manchester United’s 32 Premier League matches, completing the full 90 minutes in 25 of them. He’s also featured in 11 of their 12 Europa League games from the start.
