Manchester United centre-forward Joshua Zirkzee could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury during the Premier League clash with Newcastle.

With the score at 2-1 to the Magpies, Zirkzee went down off the ball clutching his hamstring. After being treated on the pitch almost immediately, the decision was made that the Dutchman could not continue.

Things would go from bad to worse for United without Zirkzee on the pitch. Harvey Barnes and Bruno Guimaraes completed the rout for the Magpies as they won 4-1 against the Reds.

Immediately after the match, focus is turning onto whether or not the Reds will have Zirkzee back before the season ends. MEN Sport has taken a closer look at whether that will be the case.

Will Zirkzee return for United this season?

Whether Zirkzee will return for United this season depends on the extent of the hamstring injury that he has picked up.

According to the NHS website, a grade one mild muscle strain or pull can be recovered from in a few days but returning to physical sport may take a couple of weeks.

However, if Zirkzee has a grade two injury, which is a partial tear, then it could be a month before the Dutchman is back playing football which leaves him touch and go to return before the end of the season.

The worst case scenario is that it is a grade three injury which is a complete muscle tear.

In this circumstance, it will take months to recover from the injury and that would guarantee that the Dutchman will be out for the remainder of the season.

The hope will be that Zirkzee’s injury is not too serious as he was able to walk off the pitch with the help of a physio.

However, we will not know for sure until United medical staff undertake tests on the striker.
