Police have issued an update after two ‘grenade-type devices’ were discovered at a popular reservoir on the edge of Bolton.

Emergency services were called to Rivington Reservoir at around 8am on Saturday (April 19) after two members of the public found the devices. The area was blocked off as bomb disposal experts and incident response teams worked to make the scene safe.

Officers have now revealed the devices were found to be training grenades dating back to the 1940s to 1960s. They said the devices had previously been deactivated and posed no threat.

“We told you earlier that we and emergency service partners were at Rivington Reservoir following the discovery of two grenade type devices earlier this morning and we wanted to give you an update,” the force wrote on Facebook.

“A team from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) have attended the site on Horrobin Lane and assessed the devices which appear to be training grenades from the 1940s-1960s. They were previously deactivated and posed no threat.

Emergency services on the scene

“The cordon has now been stood down and the area is open again for public access. Many thanks for your cooperation and understanding while we and our partners dealt with the incident.”

Horrobin Lane was blocked off as emergency services worked between around 8am and 11:30am on Saturday. The area has now reopened, and crews have left the scene.
