Here’s what you need to know:
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was recently involved in a war of words with Nemanja Matic ahead of the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has joked that he defended Andre Onana when reuniting with Nemanja Matic on Thursday night at Old Trafford.
Last week, Onana and Matic were involved in a war of words which started when the former claimed that United were strong favourites to beat Lyon in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. These comments were then passed on to Matic in his press conference and the former Reds midfielder took exception to them.
He would tell the media that Onana was ‘one of the worst goalkeepers’ in United’s history. The Cameroonian responded by stating that he did not mean to disrespect Lyon but that at least he had managed to win a trophy in Manchester – referring to the fact that Matic did not win silverware during his playing career in the north west.
Onana returned to the spotlight last Thursday when he made two mistakes in the 2-2 draw against Lyon and he was later dropped for the Premier League clash with Newcastle. The former Inter Milan goalkeeper has returned to the squad today but the pressure is on the shot stopper to perform.
Ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford Scholes, who is doing punditry for TNT Sports, caught up with Matic on the pitch during the advertising break. When asked by presenter Jules Breach what was said, the former midfielder joked: “I just told him to leave our goalkeeper alone, that was it.”
He then added: “He looks well, he was some player, Matic, played against him quite a few times, me and Rio [Ferdinand], when he was at Chelsea. He was saying he’s 37 and he’s got a year left but he looks fit, he looks strong enough but hopefully he doesn’t have a good night tonight.”
