Manchester United are heading towards the summer transfer window knowing they must add to their attack if they are to improve next season.

The Reds may have conceded just one more goal than fifth-placed Manchester City, however they have scored less goals than every team above them in the Premier League as well as Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers who sit below them. In fact, it is Wolves who could offer United a way to bolster their offence.

Matheus Cunha’s 15 goals in 29 appearances so far this campaign have earned him admiring glances from the likes of Arsenal so far but, according to talkSPORT, United are also keen on the Brazilian now. With a £62.5m release clause inserted into his contract, the forward is attainable and considering the amount of positions he is willing to play in, he could be a key figure in the Reds’ squad.

So with rumours mounting about the forward’s future, MEN Sport has taken a closer look at what the Brazilian has said about what lies in store for him.

Trophy ambition

Last month, Cunha spoke to The Observer about his time in the West Midlands in glowing terms. However, his end comments caught the headlines.

“We are close to achieving our goal [of staying up],” he began. “But I have made it clear that I need to take the next step.

“I want to fight for titles for big things. I have potential.”

January interest

To Cunha’s credit, the forward claimed he had received offers in January during his extensive interview with The Observer but was not inclined to leave Wolves while they were in trouble. “I had a lot of offers [in January] but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it [left],” he explained.

“Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.”

Clarification

After suggesting that his comments had been taken out of context for clicks, Cunha took to his Instagram story to clarify what he meant. “I’ve come to talk about the noise about my name,” the ex-Atletico Madrid and Hertha Berlin forward explained.

“I don’t think people have the correct interpretation. The point was about Wolves, to show everyone how happy I am to play here, to play for this team and these team-mates, and to give back all the love they give to me.

“Like ambitious players, we want to play for something more. To put this club to another level and me and my team-mates will give our all to achieve this goal.

“I want to say ‘thank you’ for the support.”
